Wassailing in Lancaster « Thread Started on Dec 19, 2008, 11:04pm »
Apologies if I sound like a newcomer - I was registered on a previous CDO forum but things seem to have changed a bit in the last 12 months! I'd like to announce Lancaster's *second* annual Wassailing event. Last year's was a great success and we had over 100 people attend. Finger's crossed that we get equally good weather this year. Details are:
"Wassailing In Fairfield Millennium Orchard (at the end of Sunnyside Lane) Saturday January 17th 2009 3pm – 5pm
Come and join us in this traditional celebration on Old Twelfth Night. Bring drums, pots and pans to bang and clatter as we process through the trees. Both young and old are invited to come dressed as the Oak King or the Apple Queen - we will draw lots to choose the sovereigns of the orchard. Traditional offerings of toast and cider to the trees. Passing of the Wassail Cup. Bonfire. Traditional Wassailing songs taught and performed. Suggested donation £1 per person."
Once more we hope to have a Mummers play (last year's was great!) but the side has yet to confirm. The orchard is ten minutes walk from Lancaster's railway station. Map is here.
